With his attitude that it deals with the culture of Cuba, he not only created his friends.

But he was one of the pioneers with "Yoruba Andabo", who are responsible for the fact that we can today experience this incredible culture at concerts and shows.

Events / Screenings

  • Screening @ University of the Streets (NYC)
  • Screening @ Festival Cubano (Lodz, Poland)
  • Screening @ Volkshaus (Zürich)

The documentary THE BLACK ROOTS OF SALSA was officially screened twice between 2010 to 2014 for an audience of approximately 800 persons and was awarded standing ovations.

Official Screenings

In 2011, the screening at the „Festival Cubano“ in Lodz, Poland in May 2011 during the first tour of LOS ASPIRINAS to Europe in May 2011 was a big success in front of a great audience. The applause just wasn’t ending.

The Swiss premier at the Volkshaus Zürich in November 2012 was accompanied by the second tour of LOS ASPIRINAS together with Adonis and was endorsed by Ingeno Solutions AG as sponsor.

I am very pleased that so many people were able to be there at this event who worked with me on the documentary and supported me over the years.

The documentary is now available online and ... waiting was worth it!

Christian Liebich

The history of the film

10 years went by since shooting the documentary started.

The idea to bring the film from the streets to the streets was not an easy task.

After a first private screening in NYC in 2010 in the "University of the Streets" in front of a private audience, the destiny wasn’t well disposed.

A first screening event was planned to take place in the theater „Natives“ in Queens NYC. Unfortunately the location became bankrupt before the premiere. The screening at the festival Salsatlanta 2010 could not take place due to unfavorable circumstances with the immigration of USA.

These circumstances and financial bottlenecks led to a delay of 5 years in the process of publication of this important document of a culture, moving people around the world.

The first recordings of the documentary THE BLACK ROOTS OF SALSA incurred in Havana in 2004. Until 2010, we filmed countless hours of footage in Havana, Madrid, Paris and Geneva, carrying the story.

Recordings

In 2005, we worked with Adonis Panter Calderón, Natividad Calderón Fiallo, Jennyselt Galata Calvo, Luis Chacón „Aspirina“, Angel Santos, as well as with the groups „Echú Alabbony“ and „Yoruba Andabo“ which resulted to basis of interviews, dance scenes and concerts.

The following years until 2009, we worked intensively with the children of "Echu Alabbony" and the professional group "Yoruba Andabo".

After finishing the DVD LA RUMBA NO VA A MORIR in 2007, we redirected the camera back to the professional protagonists.

The history of the film

During the work with the children's group "Echu Alabbony" in the sociocultural project LA RUMBA NO VA A MORIR, the desire emerged between Christian, Adonis and Virna together with the children's project to document the real beauty of the Cuban culture with great protagonists and to make accessible the cultural knowledge of the Cuban as well as interested Salsa audience.
